Dating back to the year 1718, the St. Thomas Cathedral church is one of the oldest and most distinguished landmarks in Mumbai City. The church has been standing tall for ages witnessing the ruling British empire, the fall of it, several colonisations of Mumbai and a peaceful settlement now.

Built with an effort to provide for a worship place to the British Settlements in Mumbai, the St. Thomas Church is the first Anglican Church here and is of high religious importance to the city and Mumbaikars.

St. Thomas cathedral church is symbolic of Solitude and peace painted in soothing white and yellow and adorned with beautiful embellishments. Named after one of the 12 disciples of Christ, St. Thomas, this church is a must-go-to place for every tourist who comes to Mumbai.

History of St. Thomas Cathedral Church

The foundation stone of St. Thomas cathedral church was laid by Gerald Aungier who was the then Governor of the East India Company in the year 1676 AD and the construction work started immediately. But upon Aungier's death, the church's construction also came to a standstill and was revived after almost half a century.

In the year 1715, a young enthusiastic Chaplain named Richard Cobbe came to the then Bombay and saw the half-constructed church. He completed the construction of church within three years from 1715 to 1718 and it was opened to the general public on the Christmas of 1718. Since then, the St. Thomas cathedral church has heard millions of prayers and confessions and blessed the devotees with its divinity.

The St. Thomas cathedral church was consecrated as a Cathedral in the year 1837, July. Thomas Carr was appointed as the first bishop of the church. Later in the year 1838, a clock and a tower were added towards the western end of the church.

The church was built in Neo-Classical and Neo-Gothic architecture having a white façade. There is a high resemblance between the St. Thomas cathedral church Mumbai and St. Thomas Cathedral Ireland. The interiors of the church are decorated with painted glass windows, brass antiques, plaster of Paris shapes, and memorials which are dedicated to British parishioners.
