St. Michael's Church Mumbai Address: Lady Jamshedji Road, Mahim West, Mahim, Mumbai, Maharashtra, 400016, India
The St. Michael’s church in Mahim, Mumbai is one of the oldest standing building in Mumbai. The construction of this church dates back to the 16th century and was reformed to present structure in the year 1973. The St. Michael’s church is famous for its Novena services and Christmas Mass.
History of St. Michael's Church
St. Michael’s church was originally built as a Portuguese church in the year 1534. It was named as San Miguel Church which is also the oldest Portuguese Franciscan church in Mumbai. It was built by Antonio do Porto who was a church builder and conventionally served as a convent on the banks of Mandav.
This church has served as the refuge to ‘Our Lady of Mount’ which was a famous chapel in Bandra. The chapel was destroyed during the British rule and the recoveries from the chapel were brought to St. Michael’s church. The popular picture of Virgin Mary was recovered from there, which also serves as a great tourist attraction at the St. Michael’s church.
The church has witnessed a number of brutal attacks since its construction, which were mainly done in order to gain its custody. The battle was between Apostolic Vicars and the Padroado Order to conquer the custody of the church and establish themselves as the major community.
The St. Michael’s church has been a part of 2 different battles of ownership which shifted between the two groups. Upon the first war, the Apostolic’s won the custody for the coming 60 years. After the final battle, the custody was gained by Portuguese Padroado Order. The church is a symbol of survival under multiple attacks and influenced by several colonial powers.

A devotes who successfully completes the ritual shall be blessed with all his wishes and desires by Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary.
Architecture of St. Michael's Church
The St. Michael’s church has withstood all the changes that came its way. The church has undergone several overhauls and renovations since its inception in the mid-16th century. Although the structure has been restored with best possible efforts, several renovations have led to a loss in the antiques it possessed like wooden benches dating long back, glass paintings, arched structures.
The church was adorned with several images of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. But several invasions and repeated overhauls have robbed St. Michael’s church of its beautiful adornments.
What stands today is a beautiful Red-beige colored structure magnificent in itself but the aura and soul of the place needs to be revived with combined efforts of the society.
